Mariana Chechelyuk, a 24-year-old police officer from Mariupol, has been released after spending two years in Russian captivity. Chechelyuk was captured in May 2022 while traveling to Zaporizhzhia from Mariupol and was held in Olenivka. During her time in captivity, she endured starvation, torture, and was not allowed to go for walks for months. She was initially detained at the Donetsk SIZO before being transferred to the colony in Olenivka. Chechelyuk was at the Azovstal metallurgical plant bunkers during its defense in 2022. Despite promises from the UN and ICRC to evacuate her to Zaporizhia, she was taken to a Russian filtration camp. Her release marks a long-awaited reunion with her family.
