Yana Santos defeated former women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate by unanimous decision in their three-round featured preliminary bout at UFC Des Moines in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday.

All three judges—Josh Stewart, Derek Cleary and Brian Puccillo—scored the contest 29-28 for the Russian fighter. Santos took the first two rounds with effective striking, forcing Tate to seek a late finish. The American secured a takedown in the final frame but was unable to generate enough offense to overturn the deficit before the horn sounded at 5:00 of Round 3.

The win improves Santos’ standing in the bantamweight division and halts Tate’s bid to reenter title contention after her return to active competition.
