UFC lightweight veteran Dustin Poirier said he intends to begin using steroids once he retires from mixed-martial-arts competition, telling ESPN MMA he plans to “get jacked” after the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) stops testing him.
Poirier, 36, has indicated that his bout against former featherweight champion Max Holloway at UFC 318 on July 19 will be his final appearance in the Octagon. “This will be the last time I’m ever 155 pounds in my life,” he said, adding that he looks forward to weight-lifting rather than weight-cutting after retirement.
The Louisiana-born fighter, whose résumé includes wins over Conor McGregor and Justin Gaethje, remains subject to USADA’s anti-doping protocols until he officially notifies the agency of his retirement. Once withdrawn from the testing pool, athletes are free from the program’s restrictions, although the use of performance-enhancing drugs remains prohibited in most professional sports leagues.
Poirier also offered blunt advice to aspiring fighters—“Go to college”—underscoring his expectation that life beyond professional fighting will look markedly different from the regimen he has followed during a 15-year MMA career.
