Gary Shaw, a legendary figure in the world of boxing promotion and a key figure in the mixed martial arts (MMA) industry, has passed away at the age of 79. Shaw was renowned for his contributions to boxing, having promoted numerous top stars and Hall of Fame boxers such as Tim Bradley, Diego Corrales, Shane Mosley, and Winky Wright. His promotional efforts included some of the most memorable fights in boxing history, including the classic 2005 fight between Diego Corrales and Jose Luis Castillo, and the notable Lewis-Tyson fight. Beyond boxing, Shaw played a pivotal role in the post-The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) boom era of MMA, notably bringing Kimbo Slice to national television and promoting EliteXC events on Showtime and CBS. This move helped give the company an identity and enabled a non-UFC product to find a large audience. Shaw's death was confirmed by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman. Shaw had suffered a heart attack in Florida in January and had been in ill health since, never fully recovering. He promoted or co-promoted 175 events during a 13-year run with his eponymous company, beginning in September 2002 and concluding in June 2015 with a middleweight title fight between Miguel Cotto and Daniel Geale. His career in combat sports promotion left a lasting impact, with many expressing their condolences and reflecting on his significant contributions to both boxing and MMA.

Rest in Peace, Gary Shaw. Obviously known mostly for his work as a long-time boxing promoter but that run as head of EliteXC was quite memorable. Condolences to his family.

Just a little update on Gary Shaw's passing: He was 79. Had had a heart attack in Florida in January and had been in ill health since. He was bed-ridden and never fully recovered. Promoted so many big fights, including Lewis-Tyson, and brought MMA to CBS
When I started writing about boxing, Gary Shaw was kind of on his way out of the sport. But he read a few of my pieces and was very encouraging to me. I had a chance to talk with him a few times and he was a real boxing guy through and through. R.I.P.
Beyond his boxing contributions, Gary Shaw was a key contributor to MMA and getting EliteXC on Showtime and later, CBS. His utilization of Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano gave the company an identity and ability for a non-UFC product to find a large audience

Wow. Aside from his work in boxing, he was part of a big explosion in the post-TUF boom era in MMA. Brought Kimbo Slice to national television and promoted EliteXC events. Flamed out after the Seth Petruzelli controversy. https://t.co/bShjC2Zo0q
