House Republicans Pass Trump-Supported CR to Fund Government Through 2025, Boost Veterans' Healthcare

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Republican leaders have successfully passed a continuing resolution (CR) to keep the federal government funded through the end of fiscal year 2025, averting a potential government shutdown. The bill, which extends FY 2024 government funding levels, was supported by President Donald Trump and passed with a vote that did not require Democratic support. Rep. Thomas Massie was the only Republican to vote against the CR. Republicans have accused Democrats of attempting to shut down the government out of opposition to Trump's agenda. House Democrats, led by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, have criticized the CR for not including constraints on Trump's authority and for potential cuts to healthcare and veterans' benefits. Despite this, the CR passed, ensuring continued funding for essential services, including military pay, border security, and veterans' healthcare. The bill includes an additional $6 billion for veterans' healthcare. The CR is seen by Republicans as a means to maintain government operations while allowing President Trump and his administration to focus on reducing waste, fraud, and abuse in federal spending. The bill also includes the largest pay raise for junior enlisted servicemembers since President Reagan and freezes spending levels. It contains no poison pills and no changes to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid, which Republicans argue demonstrates their commitment to supporting the American people.
