The U.S. Attorney's Office for all districts of Texas, in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), has launched 'Operation Texas Kill Switch,' a statewide initiative aimed at curbing the proliferation of illegal machine gun conversion devices, commonly known as 'switches.' These small devices, which can be made at home in an hour and installed in 60 seconds, can convert a semi-automatic handgun into a fully automatic machine gun. The ATF demonstrated how a 'Glock switch' can turn a pistol fully-automatic and announced increased prosecution for anyone who makes, sells, or owns these devices. In 2023, the ATF seized approximately 500 switches in Texas. U.S. Attorney Damien M. Diggs emphasized the danger these devices pose to the public and law enforcement. The initiative also involves the support of North Texans and Texas district courts. According to federal officials, these devices can make firearms fire faster than military-grade M4s.
