Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has secured a $1.375 billion settlement with Google, addressing allegations that the company unlawfully tracked and collected users' private data, including geolocation, incognito searches, and biometric information through services like Google Photos app, Google Next camera, and Google Assistant. The settlement, which also covers claims related to Google's Incognito mode under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, surpasses any previous state settlements against Google for similar data privacy violations, with the largest prior settlement being $93 million.
Paxton emphasized that the agreement sends a message to tech companies about respecting user privacy rights. The settlement was facilitated with the help of outside counsel Norton Rose Fulbright.
Google stated that the settlement resolves outdated claims related to product policies that have since been updated. The company expressed satisfaction in resolving these issues and plans to continue enhancing privacy controls in its services. This follows a similar $1.4 billion settlement Texas reached with Meta last year over facial recognition data.
