French qualifier Arthur Rinderknech delivered the upset of the men’s draw by eliminating world No. 3 Alexander Zverev 7-6 (3), 6-7 (8), 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4 in the Wimbledon first round. The 29-year-old, ranked 72nd, closed out the five-set marathon on Centre Court on Tuesday after play had been halted the previous evening by the All England Club’s 23:00 local curfew.

Resuming at one set apiece, Rinderknech broke early in the third and fifth sets and never surrendered his own serve during the four-hour-39-minute contest. The victory is his second against a top-10 opponent this season and the first over a player ranked inside the top five.

Zverev, seeded third and still seeking a maiden Grand Slam title, suffers his earliest defeat at a major in two years and remains without a trip beyond the last 16 at Wimbledon. His exit is the seventh by a top-10 men’s or women’s seed in the opening round, the highest tally at a major since 2018.

Rinderknech moves on to face Chile’s Cristian Garin, the world No. 110 and a lucky loser, for a place in the third round.
