Marin Cilic produced the biggest upset of the Wimbledon men’s draw so far, defeating fourth seed and home favourite Jack Draper 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in the second round on No. 1 Court. The 36-year-old Croat, ranked No. 83, struck 16 aces and won 88 percent of his first-serve points across the opening two sets to seize early control before closing out the match in two hours 38 minutes.
The win is Cilic’s first over a top-five opponent on grass and comes in his first Wimbledon appearance since 2021 after two knee operations. The 2017 finalist arrived in London on the back of a Challenger title on Nottingham grass and now advances to the third round with momentum in a section of the draw that has already lost several seeds.
Draper, 23, has yet to progress beyond the second round in four visits to his home Grand Slam despite reaching world No. 4 over the past year. Calling the defeat “one of the toughest losses,” the British No. 1 acknowledged that grass continues to expose weaknesses in his game. His early exit further opens the path for top title contenders Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
