Waymo, Alphabet Inc.'s autonomous driving unit, has received approval from California regulators to launch its self-driving taxi service, Waymo One, in Los Angeles County starting Thursday, March 14. The service will offer fully autonomous rides to the public within a 63-square-mile area. Initially, rides will be free, transitioning to a paid service in the coming weeks. Waymo has also announced plans to launch a commercial robotaxi service in Austin by the end of the year. The Los Angeles service will not include freeway driving at this stage. Waymo has a waitlist of over 50,000 people for the LA service, with select members of the public getting the first opportunity to experience the rides.
