Study Reveals Seattle's Enhanced Earthquake Risk from Linked Faults

A recent study has revealed that the Seattle area could face an enhanced earthquake risk due to a network of linked faults. While people in Seattle are familiar with the potential for a major earthquake along the Cascadia fault, this study suggests that two other faults could also shake the city with an earthquake up to 7.8 magnitude, similar to events that occurred over 1000 years ago. The study used tree rings and radiation analysis to determine the date of an ancient earthquake. The findings highlight the need to update local hazard estimates to account for the possibility of more devastating "multi-fault" earthquakes.

In recent news, a 4.2 magnitude earthquake was felt in Seattle, followed by a 4.3 magnitude earthquake. However, no tsunami was expected. The USGS encouraged residents to submit reports if they felt the earthquakes.
