Robinhood Builds Ethereum Layer 2 With Arbitrum, Shares Jump 12%

Robinhood Markets unveiled plans to launch its own Ethereum Layer-2 network built with Arbitrum’s technology, a move the online brokerage says will let it bring tokenised U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds on-chain for investors in Europe. The project, introduced at the firm’s “To Catch a Token” event during the EthCC conference on 30 June, has been branded “Robinhood Chain.”
Chief Executive Officer Vlad Tenev said the initiative represents “the seeds of what Robinhood would look like if it were built from the ground up on blockchain technology.” During the presentation, Tenev demonstrated the first live use case, confirming that Robinhood had transferred private OpenAI shares over Arbitrum. The company promises zero-commission trading for the forthcoming tokenised equity products.
By building on Ethereum, Robinhood joins peers such as Coinbase and Deutsche Bank that are developing proprietary Layer-2 networks, signalling accelerating institutional adoption of on-chain settlement. Observers say the brokerage’s choice of Arbitrum also strengthens the Layer-2 developer’s position amid intensifying competition among scaling solutions.
Investors welcomed the strategy shift: Robinhood stock rose as much as 12% on Monday, touching its highest level since the company’s 2021 listing. The rally came as Bitcoin hovered near $108,000 and broader equity markets reached fresh highs, underscoring continued appetite for crypto-linked growth stories.
