PhonePe, a Walmart-owned fintech company, has launched the Indus Appstore, a made-in-India mobile application store aimed at the Indian market, the world’s biggest market for downloads. This move positions PhonePe in direct competition with tech giants Google and Apple. The Indus Appstore, described as 'India ka Appstore' by Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Railways, and Communications, distinguishes itself by not charging developers any platform fees or commissions for in-app payments. The app store, which is available for Android users, includes over 200,000 apps featuring major names like Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft. Unlike traditional app stores, the Indus Appstore requires users to sideload the app, indicating a departure from the conventional app distribution model. The launch aligns with the #DigitalIndia and #MadeInIndia initiatives.
