Air traffic controllers at Newark Liberty International Airport briefly lost radar and radio contact with aircraft at about 3:55 a.m. Eastern Time on Friday, May 9, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The outage lasted roughly 90 seconds and led the agency to impose a temporary ground stop at one of the nation’s busiest airports. Friday’s disruption is the second in less than two weeks. An earlier equipment failure on April 28 caused widespread delays and cancellations and left some controllers on leave for what their union described as traumatic stress. According to the FAA, the latest malfunction originated at a Philadelphia facility that oversees traffic into Newark. The recurring breakdowns have intensified scrutiny of the aging radar and communications infrastructure and of persistent staffing shortages at the facility, which operates below recommended staffing levels. With the summer travel season nearing, the FAA said it is investigating the cause of both incidents and accelerating plans to modernize the systems that manage traffic in the New York–New Jersey airspace.
