Meta Platforms Inc. is set to launch a new community notes program across its social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, starting March 18 in the United States. This initiative aims to replace the company's previous third-party fact-checking system, which Meta has criticized for being biased and not scalable enough. The new system, inspired by Elon Musk's X's open-source algorithm, will allow users to add context to posts without affecting their distribution or imposing penalties. Meta's global affairs officer, Joel Kaplan, emphasized that the community notes will not limit the flow of information, marking a shift towards a more open approach to content moderation. The notes will be limited to 500 characters and will not display author names initially. To participate, users must be over 18, have an account in good standing for at least six months, and either a verified phone number or two-factor authentication. The program will initially support six languages commonly used in the U.S., including English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, French, and Portuguese, with plans to expand to other languages in the future. Around 200,000 users have already signed up to contribute to the program.
