Google has agreed to pay $700 million and make changes to its Play Store, including allowing direct payment options, in a settlement of an antitrust lawsuit brought by 36 US states and the District of Columbia. The lawsuit accused Google of overcharging consumers through unlawful restrictions on the distribution of apps on Android devices and unnecessary fees for in-app transactions. Following a jury ruling, this settlement comes after Epic Games' antitrust lawsuit victory over barriers to the Android app store, where Google was found guilty on all 11 antitrust claims. This could upend the $500-billion-a-year app store economy dominated by Apple and Google. Epic Games' win may pave the way for rival app stores on Google’s Android system, although significant changes are expected to unfold over several years due to a likely lengthy appeals process. Of the $700 million settlement, 102M US Android users will split $630M, and an additional $70M will go to other claims.
