The European Union (EU) has written a letter to Elon Musk, the CEO of social media platform X (possibly Twitter), regarding its obligations under the Digital Services Act (DSA) after the recent terrorist attacks by Hamas against Israel. The EU believes that X is being used to disseminate illegal content and disinformation within the EU. European Commissioner Thierry Breton specifically called on Musk to take action against disinformation related to the Israel-Hamas war on X. The EU has also issued a warning to Musk about potential penalties for misinformation on X. Additionally, the EU has warned Meta (formerly Facebook) about illegal content and disinformation targeting the Israel-Hamas war and has given Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, 24 hours to respond to concerns about misinformation. The EU is urging social media platforms to have clearer policies and content moderation around videos and images related to the Hamas attacks on Israel. The EU has put Meta on notice about the urgent need to address a flood of misinformation about the Israel-Hamas conflict to comply with the EU's Digital Services Act. The EU has also expanded its warning over pro-Hamas content on social media.
