Apple Explores Developer Cloud Service Using Its Own Chips

Apple has examined launching a cloud-computing service that would let outside developers rent servers powered by the company’s own chips, according to a July 3 report by The Information.

The initiative—internally called Project ACDC, for “Apple Chips in Data Centers”—has been under discussion for several years and was still being evaluated in the first half of 2024, the publication said. Executives believed Apple silicon could deliver stronger AI-inference performance at lower energy costs than traditional x86 servers.

Apple currently spends about $7 billion a year leasing Nvidia processors from Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud. Running its own hardware could reduce that outlay and position the iPhone maker to compete with AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud in a market that generated more than $270 billion in revenue last year, according to industry estimates.

The effort was championed by cloud chief Michael Abbott until his departure in 2023. Apple has not commented on whether the project is still active.
