U.S. Sets Aug. 1 Start Date for Trump’s Higher Tariffs

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Sunday that the Trump administration’s next round of country-by-country tariffs will now take effect on Aug. 1, extending by three weeks the July 9 deadline previously set by the president. The later start date offers short-term relief to trading partners still negotiating exemptions or revised terms.

President Donald Trump announced the tariff package in April, setting a 10% base rate on most imports and authorising surcharges of up to 50% on selected goods. Lutnick told reporters the White House is finalising the specific rates and that 12 to 15 letters will be sent as early as Monday to governments that have yet to reach agreements, formally notifying them of the higher duties.
