Trump Signs Tariff Ultimatum Letters for 12 Nations, Rates Up to 70%

U.S. President Donald Trump said he has signed tariff ultimatum letters for a dozen trading partners and will dispatch them on Monday, 7 July. “I signed some letters and they’ll go out on Monday, probably twelve. Different amounts of money, different amounts of tariffs,” he told reporters aboard Air Force One, without naming the countries involved. The notices outline reciprocal duty rates that could run from 10 per cent to as high as 70 per cent.

The move follows Trump’s April decision to impose a baseline 10 per cent tariff on most imports and threaten higher duties of up to 50 per cent for nations he deems unfair traders. Implementation of the extra levies was suspended for 90 days to allow bilateral talks, a grace period that ends on 9 July. Absent agreements, the new rates are expected to take effect on 1 August.

So far, Washington has concluded agreements only with the United Kingdom, which kept the 10 per cent rate while gaining sector-specific concessions, and with Vietnam, whose threatened tariff was cut to 20 per cent. Negotiations with India remain stalled, heightening speculation that it could be among the 12 recipients. Trade analysts warn that Trump’s letter-first strategy risks widening fractures in global commerce if partners refuse the “take it or leave it” terms.
