Rolling back the levy would reverse a sharp tariff increase that took effect on 9 April 2025 and intensified trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies. Washington is also pressing Beijing to ease export restrictions on rare-earth materials and broaden market access for U.S. companies. Financial markets will look to this weekend’s Geneva sessions for signs that the sides can strike a preliminary accord and avert further economic disruption.
