EU Targets Boeing, U.S. Cars with €100 Billion ($113 Billion) Tariffs if Trade Talks Fail

The European Union is preparing to impose tariffs on approximately €100 billion ($113 billion) worth of U.S. goods if ongoing trade negotiations with the Trump administration fail. This move comes in response to U.S. tariffs that currently affect 70% of EU exports to the U.S., with potential increases that could impact up to 97% of EU goods.

The proposed EU tariffs would target a range of U.S. products, including Boeing aircraft and American-made cars. The European Commission plans to circulate a draft list of these retaliatory measures to member states, with a one-month consultation period before finalization. The list is expected to be made public on Thursday.

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic has emphasized that the current tariff situation with the U.S. is unacceptable and has urged for a fair deal. He stated that the EU is not under pressure to accept an unfair agreement and is prepared to use all available tools in trade to ensure a level playing field if negotiations collapse. The EU has already delayed €21 billion in planned tariffs after the U.S. implemented a 90-day pause on its 25% and 10% tariffs. The EU's 2024 goods trade surplus with the U.S. was €198.2 billion, though the overall surplus narrows to €48 billion when services are included.
