BYD Halts Mexico Plant Plan Amid Trump Trade Uncertainty

Chinese electric-vehicle leader BYD has shelved plans for a large assembly plant in Mexico, saying escalating geopolitical tensions and uncertainty surrounding U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade policies make new investment too risky. “The geopolitical issues have a huge impact on the auto industry,” Executive Vice President Stella Li told Bloomberg during a visit to Bahia, Brazil, where BYD is opening its first factory outside Asia.

The company had evaluated three Mexican sites but paused the search last year while it awaited the outcome of the U.S. presidential election. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum later confirmed BYD had not filed a formal investment proposal, and China’s Ministry of Commerce held back approval over concerns the United States could gain access to the firm’s technology, according to people familiar with the deliberations.

Trump has since unveiled extensive tariffs on dozens of trading partners—along with targeted duties on imported cars—disrupting supply lines throughout the sector. U.S. automakers warn the measures will add billions of dollars in costs; General Motors last month earmarked about $4 billion to move production of several pickup and SUV models from Mexico to U.S. plants.

BYD says it remains interested in expanding its manufacturing footprint in the Americas but will wait for greater policy clarity before revisiting the Mexican project.
