Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Dream sideline reporter Tabitha Turner alleged on Wednesday that an Uber driver assaulted her during a ride from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on 21 June. Turner said she asked the driver, identified by police as Mericole Smith, to raise the windows and switch on the air-conditioning before the driver pulled onto an I-85 exit ramp, demanded she leave the vehicle and then deployed pepper spray.
Video recorded on Turner’s phone and witness statements led the Hapeville Police Department to conclude that Smith was the aggressor, according to an incident report. Investigators have obtained warrants for Smith’s arrest on battery and simple battery charges, both misdemeanors.
Speaking at a news conference on 25 June, Turner described lingering physical injuries and said online threats escalated after Smith posted her own account of the confrontation on social media. Turner’s attorney, Miguel Dominguez, said the reporter is cooperating with authorities and is considering further legal action.
