GE Aerospace is back in the China market after the U.S. lifted its short-lived export suspension, clearing the way for engine shipments to COMAC. This, combined with the U.S. rolling back chip-design software restrictions, signals a tactical easing in U.S.-China tech trade. Immediate beneficiaries include GE, Synopsys, and Cadence, with the latter two seeing notable share price gains.
Commercial aviation demand remains robust. Boeing’s June deliveries hit an 18-month high, aided by renewed Chinese exports, while Airbus still leads on year-to-date deliveries. The SkyWest engine deal and Bombardier’s $1.7B order (potentially expanding to $4B) highlight continued strength in regional and business jets—key markets for GE’s engines.
On the industrial side, GE Appliances’ $490M reshoring move underscores ongoing U.S. manufacturing trends amid tariff pressures. Meanwhile, in India, HAL’s Tejas fighter program is delayed by GE engine supply issues, but a domestic production agreement is near. HAL projects solid revenue growth from defense and satellite contracts, but execution will hinge on engine delivery timelines.
The sector is still digesting the impact of June’s Air India Dreamliner crash, which pressured aviation stocks and led GE to postpone its investor day. While TCI Fund’s strong performance on GE Aerospace shows investor confidence in the turnaround, traders should stay alert for further updates on U.S.-China trade, aerospace order flow, and any regulatory fallout from recent incidents.

The United States has imposed new restrictions on the export of jet engine technology and advanced semiconductor chip design software to China. The measures target key sectors, including aviation and semiconductor manufacturing.
In aviation, the U.S. Commerce Department suspended export licenses for American companies supplying components and technology to the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), specifically affecting the C919 passenger jet. The C919 relies on imported LEAP-1C engines produced by a joint venture between GE Aerospace and France's Safran. Deliveries of these engines and other U.S.-sourced components are now effectively halted. As of late May 2025, 19 C919 jets were in operation, and the model has received nearly 1,000 orders, mainly from Chinese state-owned airlines. Air China, China Southern, and China Eastern have all taken deliveries, with China Eastern's C919 fleet completing over 11,400 commercial flights.

Recent discussions among aerospace experts highlight the growing uncertainty in the global aerospace industry due to the impact of tariffs and potential trade wars. Professor Keith Hayward has noted that the long-standing tariff-free global aerospace supply chain is under threat, with the possibility of a return to conditions reminiscent of the 1930s. He emphasized that the repercussions of tariffs could lead to significant paralysis in the U.S. aerospace sector, particularly as stakeholders grapple with the financial implications of increased import taxes imposed during the Trump administration.
Hayward further remarked that the adage regarding the American economy's influence on global markets may hold true for the aerospace sector, suggesting that challenges in the U.S. could reverberate worldwide. The situation has prompted calls for a reassessment of global trade dynamics, with experts questioning what the future holds for international trade in aerospace.

TUSAŞ (Turkish Aerospace Industries) has unveiled an ambitious 10-year plan to significantly expand Turkey's defense production capabilities. The plan includes producing 1,500 aircraft, drones, and helicopters by 2034, with specific targets of manufacturing 500 KAAN fighter jets, 350 helicopters, and 600 drones. Turkey's defense industry exports reached $7.2 billion in 2024, marking a 29% increase and positioning the country as the 11th largest global exporter in the sector. Over the past two decades, Turkey has shifted from 80% import dependence to achieving 80% domestic production in defense technologies.
Key projects include the KAAN fighter jet, HÜRJET advanced jet trainer, and ANKA unmanned aerial vehicles. Turkey is investing heavily in missile turbojet engine production, aiming for an annual output of 9,000 to 9,500 units by 2030-2032. The geopolitical landscape is seen as providing Turkey a historic opportunity to become a stronger and more decisive actor within the European defense ecosystem. Notably, Spain is considering acquiring Turkey's HÜRJET aircraft and potentially adding KAAN fighters and Bayraktar and ANKA drones to its inventory, signaling Turkey's emerging role as a supplier in the European defense market. Analysts highlight this development as a milestone in Ankara’s ambitions to establish itself as a global arms supplier, with growing defense cooperation also noted between Turkey and Italy. This strategic shift reflects Turkey's transformation from a defense importer to a key player in Europe's military aviation and defense industry.
