In the Big East championship game, Tristen Newton led UConn to a 95-90 victory over St. John's, scoring 25 points and making nine assists at Madison Square Garden. Newton's outstanding performance throughout the tournament earned him the title of Most Outstanding Player (MOP) of the Big East Tournament. He was also recognized for being only the second player in Big East tournament history to record 10 or more assists in the championship game, joining the ranks of the late great Pearl Washington.
