The Pittsburgh Steelers have reached a blockbuster agreement to acquire three-time All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, veteran tight end Jonnu Smith and a 2027 seventh-round draft pick from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for three-time All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round selection. Both clubs confirmed that the deal, struck on 30 June, is contingent on the players passing physicals.
Ramsey, 30, receives a $1.5 million raise as part of an adjusted contract that lifts his 2025 compensation to $26.6 million. Pittsburgh will assume the bulk of that figure, while Miami retains about $7 million already paid to facilitate the move. Smith, coming off a Pro Bowl season in Miami, agreed to a one-year, $12 million extension with the Steelers.
The transaction is a rare player-for-player exchange of elite defensive backs and sends Fitzpatrick back to the franchise that drafted him 11th overall in 2018. By off-loading Ramsey’s long-term deal, the cap-strapped Dolphins shed future guarantees while plugging a hole at free safety; Pittsburgh, meanwhile, fortifies a secondary that already added Darius Slay this offseason.
The move continues an aggressive, win-now strategy in Pittsburgh, which earlier brought in quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver DK Metcalf. Miami, having publicly signalled its intention to part with Ramsey, gains salary-cap flexibility as it reshapes a roster that missed the playoffs last season.
