Spanish Crash Kills Liverpool Forward Diogo Jota and Brother

Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother, André Silva, were killed early Thursday when their Lamborghini veered off the A-52 motorway near Zamora in north-western Spain and burst into flames, the Spanish Civil Guard said. Firefighters found both men dead at the scene shortly after 00:30 local time.

Investigators are examining whether a rear-tyre blow-out during an overtaking manoeuvre, possibly compounded by excessive speed, caused the vehicle to leave the carriageway, according to a preliminary police statement cited by state broadcaster TVE. The Civil Guard added that forensic tests are under way to formally identify the victims.

Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 for about €45 million and scored 65 goals in 182 appearances, helping the club win the Premier League title in May as well as the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022 and another League Cup in 2024. Capped 49 times by Portugal, he was part of the national squads that lifted the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025. He married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, on 28 June and leaves three young children.

Liverpool said it was “devastated by the tragic passing” and is supporting the family, while Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença called the deaths “irreparable losses” and requested a minute’s silence before Thursday’s Women’s Euro match between Portugal and Spain. Mourners gathered outside Anfield to lay scarves and flowers, and the Premier League and UEFA said further tributes will follow.
