The NIT Board has announced changes to the qualification process for the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) in 2024. Under the new rules, conference regular season champions that do not win their conference tournament or are not selected to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship will no longer receive an automatic bid to the NIT. Instead, the NIT will guarantee two bids for the top two NET teams from the Power 6 conferences that miss the NCAA Tournament, regardless of their record. The changes were made in response to a potential competitive threat from a Fox postseason event involving the Big East, Big Ten, and Big 12 conferences.

Dan Gavitt said that the NIT changes were not done as a test run and precursor to NCAA tourney changes to expand add more high-major teams.
Dan Gavitt adds they will look at the NIT qualifications and selection process again after the media rights agreement, and there could be changes again to how the teams are chosen. Basically what he's saying is that these changes were a financial decision from the NCAA.
On a call with media, NCAA senior VP of basketball Dan Gavitt says of the NIT, which is up for bidding next year for a new TV deal: "The very viability of the event could be in jeopardy."
NCAA VP Dan Gavitt on NIT format change on a call just now: “There was a new and credible challenge in the postseason space … We believe we needed to evolve the NIT... and the changes are a preemptive attempt to keep the NIT viable, quite frankly.” https://t.co/6GEQ99Lg0p
Dan Gavitt on the decision to change the NIT: "This is a preemptive attempt to keep the NIT viable." He also mentioned how the media rights are up after the season.
The changes being made to the NIT for 2024 should be viewed as a harbinger for something worse They may not end up ruining the NCAA Tournament, but they're going to try Today's newsletter. It's free for all to read https://t.co/detjNF6cSg
From yesterday: How a possible Fox tourney spurred the reorganization of the NIT, much to the disappointment of lots of people. https://t.co/6GEQ99Lg0p
Just received the full press release for the “Coalition for the Future of College Athletics” to lobby congress for NIL/amateurism legislation. 28 conferences have signed on so far. A couple notes about this group⬇️ https://t.co/QOdkJXGW4d
Desperate to save itself, the NCAA is using the NIT to kiss up to Power 5 conferences ... by selling out its smallest schools. When the NCAA goes under, people will dance on its grave. This another reason why. https://t.co/SlHtVIO8ua

"You have the NCAA leadership making a public declaration that six conferences are going to be treated preferentially, and in a protected class for access to a postseason NCAA event. That doesn’t seem fair.’’ On NIT changes, and what's behind them. https://t.co/6GEQ99Lg0p
With all the public backlash from just about every commissioner, coach and AD outside the power leagues, the NCAA should do the right thing and act like yesterday never happened with the NIT changes. Give back the regular-season champs the automatic bid.
The NCAA announced major changes to the NIT and the college hoops world is not happy https://t.co/JqdpQambfF
The NIT changes, at least from my vantage point, seem designed to cut the legs out from the tournament FOX is trying to start. https://t.co/mkkSXzwqZJ
Today's reaction to the NIT changes (which, like everyone else, I dislike) shows me two things: 1. The NIT still matters, still serves a purpose. 2. Any major changes to NCAA Tourney qualification are going to be met with backlash on a scale we've never seen in American sports.
Some context on the NIT announcement: The changes (guaranteeing two bids for the power six leagues and no more automatic bids in the 32-team field) were made as a direct result of the competitive threat of a Fox postseason event for 2024 or '25 with the Big East, Big Ten, Big 12,… https://t.co/m4U6QLPVSd

New 32-team NIT format might help #Butler qualify for NIT, if Butler doesn't make NCAA field. NIT semifinals and championship game are at Hinkle Fieldhouse. https://t.co/dLkSetuQCe
Wrote this when news of Fox’s idea broke. It remains true in the wake of the NCAA’s NIT changes today. The NCAA tournament as we know it is now under threat because people have a financial interest in screwing up how it works. https://t.co/4LhKK1Vmh3
The NIT will no longer guarantee spots for regular-season conference winners that don’t win their league tournaments. The changes will no doubt strike fear in mid-major programs, and rightly so ⤵️ https://t.co/rmfcwQbRQC
Significant changes are coming to the NIT selection process this season. 🏀 Regular-season conference champions that do not win their conference tournament will no longer receive auto bids. https://t.co/vTm9xbdqq8
The NCAA opting to not reward NIT auto bids in '24 to mid-major reg-season champs (that don't make NCAAT) feels like a direct reaction to Fox trying to stage a power-conf-only postseason event (that some don't want anyway). All of this is less than ideal. https://t.co/iFMNHSHCYo
Big NIT changes. No more auto-bids for teams that win their conf regular season but lost in conf tournament. Instead, 12 auto-bids for top two NET teams from the Power 6 conferences that miss the NCAAT, regardless of record, then 20 at-larges. https://t.co/30FUPC3cun
