Alcaraz Beats Struff to Extend Wimbledon Streak to 17 Matches

Carlos Alcaraz advanced to the fourth round of Wimbledon on Friday, defeating Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 25 minutes on Centre Court. The world No. 2 raced through the opener in 27 minutes, dropped the second set as his first-serve percentage dipped, then re-asserted control with cleaner hitting—finishing the match with nine winners to three unforced errors in the third set and breaking Struff once more late in the fourth.

The result extends the 22-year-old Spaniard’s winning streak at the All England Club to 17 matches and his overall tour run to 21, a sequence that began after his loss in April’s Barcelona final. Earlier in the week Alcaraz survived a 4-hour-37-minute, five-set battle against Fabio Fognini and eased past British qualifier Oliver Tarvet in straight sets; last month he lifted his second Queen’s Club trophy as part of a grass-court sweep that followed his Roland-Garros triumph.

Alcaraz, already a two-time Wimbledon champion, will meet No. 14 seed Andrey Rublev on Sunday for a place in the quarter-finals. Three more victories would make him the fifth man in the Open Era—after Björn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic—to claim three consecutive Wimbledon titles.
