Tesla Starts Supervised Full Self-Driving Tests in Madrid Amid EU Push

Tesla has begun on-road trials of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised software in Madrid, expanding a European pilot that already includes Paris, Rome and Berlin. A video released on 3 July shows a production-spec Model 3 navigating city streets near landmarks such as the Puerta de Alcalá and the Fuente de Cibeles without driver input, while a safety operator remains ready to intervene.

The Madrid testing follows Tesla’s 27 June filing for continent-wide regulatory clearance of FSD, a prerequisite for offering the assisted-driving package to customers across the European Union. The company says it is working with national transport authorities and the European Commission to secure approval, which would allow an over-the-air software update to activate the system on new and existing Model S, 3, X and Y vehicles.

FSD Supervised is already available in the United States, Canada, Mexico and China. Tesla claims drivers using its Autopilot suite—of which FSD is the most advanced tier—were involved in accidents at one-tenth the rate of the broader driving population in the first quarter of 2025. The company ultimately plans to remove the supervision requirement and deploy a dedicated robotaxi service once regulators sign off on full autonomy.
