Explosions Ignite Toxic Blaze at Spain’s Envirobat Battery Plant

A series of explosions ignited a large fire on Friday evening at Envirobat España, a lithium-battery recycling plant in the Ródano industrial estate of Azuqueca de Henares, Guadalajara province. Castilla-La Mancha’s 112 emergency service said the blaze began shortly after 19:00 and generated a towering column of toxic smoke that was visible for kilometres.

Authorities issued ES-Alert messages to residents of Azuqueca de Henares, Alovera and Cabanillas del Campo, urging them to remain indoors, close doors and windows and avoid the area while firefighters tackled the still-uncontrolled flames. Municipal emergency plans were activated and the surrounding zone was cordoned off.

Owner José Álvarez said none of the 22 workers present at the plant were injured. Fire crews from Sigüenza, Guadalajara city, Azuqueca and neighbouring Madrid, along with local police and the Guardia Civil, were deployed to contain the blaze and monitor air quality. The cause of the explosions has not yet been determined.
