Ramaphosa Removes DA Deputy Minister Whitfield; DA Issues 48-Hour Ultimatum and Withdraws from National Dialogue

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa removed Andrew Whitfield, the Democratic Alliance (DA) Member of Parliament and Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, from his position on June 25, 2025, under Section 93(1) of the Constitution. The Presidency confirmed the decision, stating there are no plans for a full cabinet reshuffle. Whitfield's dismissal sparked tensions within the Government of National Unity (GNU), with the DA expressing strong opposition. The DA alleges Whitfield was removed for opposing corruption and subsequently issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding that Ramaphosa dismiss several African National Congress (ANC) ministers and deputy ministers implicated in corruption.

Following the president's failure to act on this ultimatum, the DA announced its withdrawal from the National Dialogue process initiated by Ramaphosa, although it confirmed it would remain part of the GNU. DA leader John Steenhuisen described the National Dialogue as ineffective without the DA's participation. The dismissal and ensuing political dispute have intensified coalition tensions in South Africa's fragile government.
