Tether Takes 32% Stake in Elemental Altus, Launches Self-Custodial Wallet Kit

Tether Ltd., issuer of the USDT stablecoin, said on 12 June it acquired roughly 78.4 million shares of Toronto-listed gold royalty company Elemental Altus Plc, giving it about a 31.9% stake. The move is part of the firm’s plan to build financial infrastructure backed by hard assets such as gold and Bitcoin.

The agreement includes an option with AlphaStream Limited that would allow Tether to purchase a further 34.4 million Elemental Altus shares after October 2025, potentially lifting its ownership well above the current level. Financial terms of the initial purchase and the option were not disclosed.

The investment follows Tether’s 10 June release of a Wallet Development Kit, an open-source, self-custodial platform that uses peer-to-peer networks for transaction broadcasting. Rumble Wallet has already committed to build on the new architecture. Together, the acquisition and the software launch underline Tether’s push to diversify beyond its flagship stablecoin into hard-asset-backed finance and decentralized infrastructure.
