Nottingham Forest defeated Aston Villa 2-0 in a Premier League match at the City Ground. Forest took an early lead in the 4th minute with a goal from Aina. Villa struggled to break down Forest's defensive tactics and were vulnerable to counter-attacks. Forest extended their lead in the second half with a long shot from Mangala, which Villa's goalkeeper Martinez should have saved. Villa had a few chances but failed to convert. Villa manager Unai Emery expressed disappointment with the result and called for improvement in their mentality to compete with top teams. Forest's win ended their winless run of seven games.
The challenge Forest posed is what big teams often encounter: Low blocks, counter-attacks and forced to deliver from wide areas. A rare off day, but if #AVFC want to be regarded among the league’s elite, those questions need to be answered more coherently. https://t.co/D46pwmFDr9
When #NFFC really needed a win, the City Ground took a deep breath and roared them to it once more. While Steve Cooper came up with a tactical plan that suggested it is far too soon to write him off. https://t.co/47woTX5Hlc
One of those days for #AVFC. Forest's home record is good & always going to pose issues stylistically. Every team has off days & Villa couldn't get going. But it shouldn't lessen 12 months of progress. Bouncing back next week means today will be seen as a lesson to learn from.

Asked Unai Emery about the problems posed by Forest sitting deep. Praised #AVFC for the progress shown this year but he still wants "more" from their mentality. "If we want to be in the top 7 teams, we have to reduce the type of mistakes we did today."

FT: Forest 2-0 #AVFC Villa not at the races - how you feared they'd lose, happened. Slow with the ball, soon ran out of ideas and could never stop Forest's threat vs the high line. Emery looked increasingly exasperated by the end, which summed up the performance. An off day.
#AVFC's average positioning map shows only two players in their own half. Forest, in contrast, only have two players in the attacking half. Yet they are 2-0 up. Hosts have done an excellent job in suffocating space before springing on Villa, who have walked into the trap so far
Best chance for #AVFC so far - Watkins gives and goes with McGinn. The Villa captain crosses and Watkins gets on the end of it, but cannot direct his header goalwards. Cash is badly struggling with his shoulder and is looking over at the bench.
Goal Forest Mangala. 2-0. Long shot. Martinez gets a hand on the shot but not strong enough - loops up and spins into the net. Twice there Villa were undone by the spin of the ball. Have to say Martinez should do a lot better. #AVFC
Only one Forest player has made more passes than Emi Martinez in that first half. #AVFC need to quicken it up in possession and have to stop looking so vulnerable on transition - it's "the structure" Emery often refers to. Big test in the second half
HT and #NFFC hold a 1-0 lead thanks to a crisply taken goal from Aina. They will feel hard done by over a soft free-kick given against Dominguez, which denied Awoniyi a clear sight of goal. A good game so far. But Villa more than in this, still. Forest look dangerous on break.
HT: Forest 1-0 #AVFC Intriguing 45. Pattern was basically set by the 1st minute. Villa tasked with breaking down a side prepared to sit & launch forward on transition. Red shirts queuing up to run behind at times. Villa need to be more snappy with and without the ball, in truth
Emery has been telling Digne to get higher and wider throughout the half. Digne and Zaniolo working some nice pockets behind Aina, but are stretching for that final touch/cross/shot. Forest still making me nervous on the counter #AVFC
Forest's gameplan, so far effective, is to essentially pick the pockets in midfield and play first time through #AVFC's high-line
#AVFC progressing the ball nicely out from defence and into wide areas. Digne and Cash seeing a lot of the ball. But need to get Diaby and Watkins more involved in the game. How they do that against a low-block remains to be seen.
A quarter of an hour in and #AVFC have been pretty good with the ball (the corner notwithstanding). But without it, they are giving Forest encouragement & chance to play to their strengths. Need to stop counter-attacks at source better. Kamara maybe lucky to win that foul, too
Damn, Forest just wrecked Villa
Goal Forest. Aina outside of the box. 4th minute. 1-0. #AVFC caught with the high line twice already against Forest's very direct front three.
