The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled that UEFA and FIFA's rules prohibiting clubs and players from entering competitions such as the European Super League are unlawful, marking a significant blow to the football governing bodies and potentially reviving the controversial league. The case, first lodged in 2021 by clubs including Barcelona and Real Madrid, may reshape the future of football. The ECJ also addressed the Antwerp homegrown case, suggesting the possibility of enforced incentivization of training homegrown players. UEFA is now tasked with proving that its rules for home-grown players are non-discriminatory and promote recruitment and training. Bernd Reichart, CEO of A22 Sports Management, hailed the decision, stating, “We have won the right to compete. The UEFA monopoly is over. Football is free.” UEFA responded to the ruling by expressing confidence in its new rules, asserting that they are in line with European laws and regulations.

Any @premierleague club owner feeling emboldened to resume European Super League plotting following the ECJ ruling would be very naive. Fans - and the incoming regulator - won’t have it as it would destroy PL and pyramid. Protests, boycotts, sanctions & vilification would ensue.

The initial reading that it was a huge win for the ESL are misguided. The ruling basically means the rules on pre-authorisation Uefa had the time were unlawful. But they can still have those rules. And those rules have already been changed.

The Super League did not collapse so spectacularly because of European law. It collapsed because fans around Europe rebelled so massively against the idea that it became completely unviable. That has not changed.
