An analysis of ancient and modern genomes suggests that contemporary humans inherited Neanderthal DNA from a single, prolonged period of mixing approximately 47,000 years ago. Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis), our closest evolutionary relatives, were spread across Europe and as far east as the Altai Mountains in southern Siberia. Archeological evidence in the Levant region indicates that Neanderthals and Homo sapiens coexisted and likely interbred early in our origin story. Additionally, Neanderthals and Denisovans likely shared offspring when climate change connected their populations.
