A new study reveals that Homo sapiens migrated out of Africa 60 to 70 thousand years ago and settled in a geographic hub spanning Iran, southeast Iraq, and northeast Saudi Arabia. This region served as their first homeland outside of Africa. Neanderthals were the closest-known relatives of Homo sapiens and coexisted with them until about 40,000 years ago.
