SpaceX’s Starship prototype Ship 36 exploded during a static fire test at the company’s Starbase facility near Brownsville, Texas, at about 11 p.m. local time on Wednesday, sending a large fireball into the night sky. The vehicle was being prepared for its 10th flight test when it blew apart while still secured to the stand; no injuries were reported.
The company said the craft “experienced a major anomaly,” and founder Elon Musk later posted that preliminary data points to the rupture of a high-pressure nitrogen composite overwrapped pressure vessel in the payload bay—an issue SpaceX has not seen before. Engineering teams are working with local, state and federal officials to secure the site and investigate the cause.
The blast marks at least the fourth loss of a Starship vehicle this year, underscoring the technical hurdles facing the 400-foot launch system that NASA is counting on to deliver astronauts to the Moon by 2027 and that Musk hopes will ultimately ferry people to Mars. Continued failures could complicate SpaceX’s test schedule and regulatory approvals for future launches from South Texas.
