A man with Parkinson's disease, previously falling up to six times a day, can now walk several kilometers without falling or using a cane, thanks to a device that electrically stimulates his spinal cord. A spinal cord neuroprosthesis targeting leg motor neurons has shown improvements in walking and reduction of gait freezing in nonhuman primate models and a person with advanced Parkinson’s disease. Additionally, a new robotic system has been created to measure how stroke survivors with arm weakness use their arms daily, aiming to help them break the habit of relying on their stronger arm and improve recovery.
