Asteroid 2024 YR4, 4% Chance to Hit Moon Dec 22, 2032, Could Threaten Satellites Including Starlink with 100,000 Tons Debris

Researchers have identified a 174-220 feet (53-67 meters) wide asteroid named 2024 YR4 that has a 4% chance of colliding with the Moon on December 22, 2032, according to the European Space Agency (ESA). Initially considered a potential threat to Earth, updated observations using the James Webb Space Telescope have ruled out any direct impact on our planet. However, if 2024 YR4 strikes the Moon, it could create a massive explosion, ejecting approximately 100,000 tons of debris into space. About 10% of this debris may travel toward Earth, posing a risk to satellites, including Starlink satellites, and potentially triggering a spectacular meteor shower visible from the ground. Experts emphasize that while the Moon itself would remain intact, the event could disrupt satellite operations and create hazards in Earth's orbit. The probability of impact will remain under review until further observations are possible around mid-2028.
