A powerful blizzard has battered the Sierra Nevada, leaving roads impassable and causing widespread disruptions. The storm, which extended a blizzard warning and made roads like Interstate 80 impassable, dumped over 87 inches of snow at Donner Peak and is expected to continue, with more snow forecasted. California has been hit hard, with the storm knocking out power for 23,000 residents, shutting down freeways, and leading to the closure of ski resorts amid 190mph winds. The extreme weather conditions have also led to snow blowers breaking down and a 100-mile stretch of I-80 remaining closed with no estimated time for reopening. Despite the challenges, efforts to reopen roads are underway, with Highway 50 reopening to trapped vehicles and I-80 reopening to passenger vehicles only. The blizzard has significantly contributed to the snowpack, with totals reaching impressive heights of 6 to 11 feet, and the statewide snowpack now above average for the first time this season, with a peak snowfall of 10.5 feet at Donner Peak.
