A 40-foot female gray whale was found dead off the coast of Crown Beach in Alameda over the weekend. The whale, first spotted on Saturday evening, is believed to have possibly been struck by a ship. This incident, not to be confused with another gray whale recently seen off Daly City, marks the first reported whale death in the San Francisco Bay area this year. Officials from the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, along with staff from the California Academy of Sciences, are involved in the investigation, with a necropsy planned to determine the exact cause of death.
