Zelensky Signals Readiness for Direct Putin Meeting to End War

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on 3 July his government is prepared for a leaders’ summit aimed at ending Russia’s war, adding that he is willing to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin directly if it could bring the conflict to a close.

Zelensky’s comments came after reporters asked him about an earlier phone conversation between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump. “I’m not sure that they have a lot of common ideas, common topics to talk,” he told journalists, while stressing that Kyiv remains open to any format that could secure peace.

Putin and Zelensky have not met face-to-face since Moscow’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022, and previous rounds of negotiations broke down within weeks. The Kremlin has recently signalled interest in talks under conditions Ukraine has rejected, while Kyiv continues to rely on Western military and financial support. Zelensky’s latest remarks indicate he sees a direct meeting with Putin as a potential next step despite uncertainty over the substance of the Putin-Trump dialogue.
