Russian President Vladimir Putin told U.S. President Donald Trump in a phone call on Thursday that Moscow will not abandon what it calls the “root” objectives of its military campaign in Ukraine, according to Kremlin foreign-policy aide Yuri Ushakov. Ushakov described the conversation, which he said lasted about an hour, as frank and business-like. Thursday’s call is the latest in a series of direct exchanges between the two leaders since Trump returned to the White House, underscoring Washington’s effort to test Russia’s appetite for a diplomatic off-ramp even as Moscow holds to its territorial demands.
