Hungary's governing party, Fidesz, has proposed constitutional amendments that could lead to the prohibition of an annual Pride March celebrating the LGBTQ community and the expulsion of Hungarian citizens with dual nationality if they are deemed a threat to the country's sovereignty. The proposed changes emphasize the protection of children's physical, mental, and moral development above all other rights, potentially justifying the ban on the Pride March. Prime Minister Viktor Orban has been critical of the LGBTQ community and has promised to crack down on foreign funding of independent media and NGOs, following the suspension of funding by the U.S. Agency for International Development under President Donald Trump. Orban stated in parliament that the 'corruption network that governs the entire Western world of politics and media must be eliminated.' In addition to targeting the LGBTQ community, the amendments would also allow for the expulsion of dual citizens if their actions are seen as a threat to Hungary's national sovereignty, public order, territorial integrity, or security. The changes would also enshrine in the constitution the recognition of only two sexes, male and female, an idea supported by Trump. Orban faces elections in 2026 with the economy recovering from an inflation crisis and a new opposition party posing a significant challenge. Hungary has also threatened to block the EU's renewal of sanctions against approximately 2,000 Russians unless Russian billionaire Mikhail Fridman is removed from the sanctions list. The sanctions are set to expire on Saturday unless all 27 EU capitals agree to extend them for another six months. Luxembourg supports Hungary's demand to have Fridman removed from the list, amid a lawsuit against Luxembourg by Fridman. Hungary has also proposed to remove 9 individuals from the EU sanctions list against Russia and Belarus and seeks to unfreeze billions in Russian assets.
