Martin Truex Jr. and Denny Hamlin were both eliminated from the NASCAR playoffs after disappointing performances at Martinsville Speedway. Truex Jr. had an average playoff race finish of 19.0, an engine failure at Homestead, and a speeding penalty at Martinsville. Hamlin, who was denied another final four berth, attributed his loss to bad luck and things that could have been better controlled. Despite driving a great race, Hamlin's performance was not enough to secure a spot in the championship. Both drivers expressed their frustration with their playoff exits.
