The White House has announced a series of listening sessions to shape the American Climate Corps (ACC), a new initiative aimed at engaging young people in the fight against climate change and providing pathways to good-paying careers in clean energy, conservation, and climate resilience. The ACC, which was a significant victory for climate activists in September, will now be further developed through input from the younger generation. The Biden administration is also taking steps to launch the climate corps, with six federal agencies, including AmeriCorps, collaborating to make it central to the nation's climate resilience efforts. In a related effort to combat pollution and promote environmental justice, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is distributing over $14 million from the Inflation Reduction Act to New Mexico for methane pollution reduction. Additionally, the EPA has announced a $600 million disbursement for the Environmental Justice Thriving Communities Grantmakers program, which will be distributed through 11 regional grantmaking organizations to community-led environmental justice projects in disadvantaged communities. Fordham University in the Bronx has secured $50 million of this funding for Environmental Justice grants, thanks to a partnership with Congressman Ritchie Torres. The EPA has selected 11 grantmaking partners to assist in distributing these funds to the most needy communities, reaffirming its commitment to environmental justice and reducing barriers to grant funding, including helping communities access funding to reduce home energy costs and breathe cleaner air. Maryland's Green and Healthy Homes Initiative will also receive $50M to support communities that bear the burden of environmental harm and pollution.
