US Halts Some Pledged Weapons to Ukraine After Stockpile Review

The White House said the United States will withhold certain weapons previously promised to Ukraine after a Pentagon review concluded that American stockpiles of those systems are critically low. The decision, announced late Tuesday, follows an internal assessment of military inventories ordered by the Defense Department.

Officials did not specify which items are being held back, but people familiar with the review told Reuters the pause affects Patriot air-defense missiles, precision artillery rounds and other high-demand munitions. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said the move "puts America’s interests first" and ensures U.S. forces remain fully equipped.

The suspension comes as Russia intensifies aerial strikes across Ukraine, complicating Kyiv’s efforts to secure additional air-defense capacity. Since Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Washington has committed more than $66 billion in security assistance to Ukraine, much of it delivered under the previous Biden administration.

President Donald Trump, who met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of last week’s NATO summit, has signaled a shift toward reducing U.S. military outlays abroad. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers in June that future aid would be "more targeted" as the administration presses European allies to shoulder greater responsibility.
