UK Moves to Ban Palestine Action Under Terrorism Act After RAF Incident

UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said on Monday she will proscribe the direct-action group Palestine Action under the Terrorism Act 2000, describing the move as a "legitimate response" to a pattern of criminal damage. A draft proscription order will be laid before Parliament on 30 June; if approved by both Houses, it will become illegal to belong to, or invite support for, the organisation.

The decision follows a breach of RAF Brize Norton—Britain’s largest air force base—last week in which two activists used electric scooters to enter the site and sprayed red paint on two military aircraft. Cooper called the incident a "disgraceful attack" and cited what she said is the group’s long record of damaging defence facilities and suppliers, including previous actions at sites linked to Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems.

Once the ban takes effect, Palestine Action will join proscribed organisations such as Hamas, al-Qaeda and Islamic State; offences related to membership, fundraising or public support could carry sentences of up to 14 years. The Home Office stressed the measure targets only this group and does not restrict lawful pro-Palestinian protest, while Palestine Action denounced the designation as an "unhinged reaction" and civil-liberties advocates warned it could chill legitimate dissent.
